How Do I Answer, “Where Did God Come From?”

Short answer

God didn’t come from anywhere—He has always existed. Everything created has a beginning, but Christians believe God is the eternal Creator of all things (Psalm 90:2). For kids, say simply: “God was never made; He has always been.”

It is one of the biggest questions a child can ask—and it often comes at bedtime, in the car, or right after you thought you had explained everything: “Where did God come from?”

A helpful parent answer is: **God didn’t come from anywhere. God has always existed. Everything in the universe has a beginning, but God is the One who gives beginnings to everything else.**

That may sound simple, but it is actually one of the deepest Christian beliefs about God.

Start With A Child-Friendly Answer

Try saying something like:

> “That’s a great question. We came from our parents, and the world was made by God. But God is different from everything He made. God never had a beginning. He has always been alive, always loving, and always God.”

For younger kids, keep it short. You do not need to explain philosophy, time, or causation all at once. A preschooler may just need: “God has always been.” An older child may be ready for: “Everything created needs a cause, but God is not created.”

The Bible says, “Before the mountains were born… from everlasting to everlasting you are God” (Psalm 90:2). That means God did not begin when the world began. He was already there.

Explain The Difference Between God And Created Things

Children naturally assume everything has a “where did it come from?” answer. Toys come from stores. Babies come from parents. Trees come from seeds. So it makes sense that they ask, “Where did God come from?”

You can gently explain:

  • **Created things have beginnings.** People, animals, planets, stars, and galaxies all began.
  • **God is not a created thing.** God is the Creator.
  • **God does not need someone else to make Him.** If someone made God, then that someone would be greater than God—which would mean God was not really God.

A simple comparison may help: “A story has characters, but the author is not one of the characters inside the story. God made time, space, and the world, so He is not stuck inside them the way we are.”

John begins his Gospel this way: “In the beginning was the Word” (John 1:1). Christians understand this to mean that God was already present “in the beginning.” He did not arrive later.

It’s Okay To Say, “This Is A Mystery”

Parents sometimes feel pressure to give a perfect answer. But with God, some things are truly beyond us. That is not a failure—it is part of faith.

You might say:

> “We can know true things about God, but we can’t know everything about God. He is bigger than our minds. That’s why we keep learning, praying, and asking good questions.”

This teaches children two important lessons at once: Christianity welcomes honest questions, and God is not small enough to be fully explained like a math problem.

Isaiah 40:28 says, “The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.” Everlasting means God does not run out, grow old, or come from someone before Him.

Use Their Question To Build Wonder, Not Fear

A child’s question about where God came from is often not a challenge to faith. It is usually curiosity. Answer warmly and praise the question: “I love that you’re thinking about God.”

Here are a few practical ways to keep the conversation going:

  • **Ask what they mean.** “Are you wondering who made God, or where God lives?”
  • **Use creation as a doorway.** Look at stars, mountains, animals, or a baby photo and say, “All of these had a beginning. God is the One who began it all.”
  • **Avoid shaming the question.** Don’t say, “You shouldn’t ask that.” Many faithful believers have wondered about the same thing.
  • **Return to God’s character.** God has always existed—and He has always been loving, good, and faithful.
  • **Pray simply.** “God, thank You that You have always been here and that You help us know You.”

If your child asks, “But how can God have no beginning?” you can answer honestly: “I don’t fully understand it either. But if God made everything, then He must be different from everything He made.”

A Simple Script You Can Use

Here is a complete answer you can adapt:

> “God didn’t come from anywhere. He has always existed. Everything we know—people, animals, stars, and time itself—had a beginning, but God is the Creator of all beginnings. The Bible says God is ‘from everlasting to everlasting’ (Psalm 90:2). That is hard for us to imagine, and that’s okay. God is bigger than our minds, but He has shown us that He is good, loving, and close to us.”

The goal is not to make your child stop asking. The goal is to help them see that big questions can lead us toward worship. God is not just “very old.” He is eternal—the One who was, who is, and who will always be (Revelation 1:8).

More questions parents ask

Who Made God?
Yes. You can say, “Nobody made God. God has always existed.” Then explain that everything created needs a maker, but God is the Creator, not a created thing.
Was God Alive Before Time Began?
Christians believe God created time along with the universe, so God is not limited by time the way we are. Psalm 90:2 says God is “from everlasting to everlasting.”
Can Young Children Understand That God Is Eternal?
Yes, in a simple way: “God has always been, and He made everything that has a beginning.” Young children do not need a full philosophical explanation to understand the basic idea.
Is It Wrong For My Child To Ask Where God Came From?
No. Honest questions can be a sign that your child is thinking deeply. Welcome the question, give a simple answer, and let them know Christians have always asked big questions about God.
What If I Don’t Know How To Explain It?
You can say, “I don’t know everything about God, but Christians believe He has always existed.” It is healthy for children to see that faith includes both true answers and humble mystery.
