What Should My Child Wear to First Communion?
Short answer
Most children wear simple, respectful church clothes for First Communion—often white dresses or suits, depending on your parish’s custom. Check your parish guidelines first, then choose something modest, comfortable, and easy for your child to move, kneel, and pray in.
First Communion is a joyful milestone, and it is natural to want your child to look special. The goal is not to impress, but to help your child enter the day with reverence, peace, and a sense of celebration. Jesus calls Himself “the bread of life” (John 6:35), so the clothing should support the deeper meaning of the day: receiving Christ in the Eucharist.
Start With Your Parish’s Guidelines
Before buying anything, ask your parish, Catholic school, or First Communion coordinator for the dress code. Some parishes have very specific expectations: white dresses for girls, white shirts and dark pants for boys, no gloves, no veils over the face, or no sneakers. Others simply ask for “Sunday best.”
If your child is preparing through a parish program, the catechist may send a note home about approved colors, sleeve length, shoes, accessories, and whether robes are provided. When in doubt, email the parish office. It is much easier to ask early than to discover on the morning of First Communion that something does not fit the local custom.
Common First Communion Outfits
For girls, the traditional outfit is a white dress, often with simple details such as lace, tulle, or embroidery. Many families add a veil, headband, flower crown, or simple hair bow. Shoes are usually white or light-colored dress shoes, though some parishes allow neutral flats or sandals.
For boys, common options include a white shirt with dress pants, a tie, and dress shoes. Some wear a suit, blazer, vest, or a white jacket, depending on the parish tradition. In many places, boys wear navy, black, gray, or khaki pants with a white dress shirt.
The color white is often chosen because it reminds us of baptismal grace and new life in Christ. St. Paul writes, “all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ” (Galatians 3:27). First Communion continues that journey of faith begun at Baptism.
Choose Modesty, Comfort, and Prayerfulness
A good First Communion outfit should be dressy, modest, and comfortable enough for your child to sit, stand, kneel, walk in procession, and receive Communion calmly. Have your child try on the full outfit ahead of time—not just the dress or shirt, but also shoes, socks, tights, tie, veil, jacket, and any accessories.
Ask practical questions:
- Can my child kneel without pulling at the outfit?
- Are the shoes comfortable enough for the whole Mass?
- Is the dress or shirt too itchy, tight, or hot?
- Can my child walk safely in the shoes?
- Will the hairstyle or accessory become a distraction?
It is also wise to practice receiving Communion in the outfit if your parish has a rehearsal. Children feel more confident when nothing is surprising. A simple, well-fitting outfit is almost always better than something beautiful but uncomfortable.
What to Avoid
Avoid clothing that is too flashy, too casual, or likely to distract your child or others during Mass. This might include very high heels, large jewelry, heavy makeup, loud patterns, shirts with slogans, sportswear, or anything that does not match the parish dress code.
Try not to make the day feel like a fashion performance. Children can easily pick up on adult stress about photos, hair, or clothing. Scripture gently reminds us that “the Lord looks on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). The outfit matters because the occasion is sacred, but the heart of the day is Jesus.
If cost is a concern, ask your parish quietly about dress exchanges, borrowed outfits, or low-cost options. Many families are happy to pass along First Communion clothing. A simple white dress, a clean dress shirt, or a borrowed suit can be just as fitting and reverent as something new.
Help Your Child Understand the Meaning
As you prepare the outfit, connect it to the meaning of the sacrament. You might say, “We dress carefully because this is a holy day, but the most important thing is that Jesus loves you and is coming to you in the Eucharist.”
You can also make preparation peaceful by laying everything out the night before: outfit, shoes, socks, hair items, rosary or prayer book if used, and any required parish materials. Leave plenty of time in the morning so your child does not feel rushed.
A good rule of thumb is: follow the parish, keep it reverent, keep it comfortable, and keep the focus on Christ. First Communion is not mainly about what your child wears—it is about Who your child receives.
