Hannah's Prayer — a 5-minute devotion for Rouen families

1 Samuel 1 · Praying honestly and eating again

Year after year Hannah wept and prayed for a child, so silently that the priest thought she was drunk. She poured out her heart, went home, and ate again — her face no longer downcast, before anything had changed.

This works best in Rouen as a bedtime reading. Lights low, 1 Samuel 1 read slowly, the memory verse said twice, then the prayer. Younger children fall asleep on "praying honestly and eating again"; older ones usually want to argue about it first, which is fine.

Memory verse

“I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him.”

1 Samuel 1:27

Table question

What have you been praying about for a long time?

30-second prayer

God, hear the prayers we have prayed for years. Give us peace before the answer comes. Amen.

Make it stick: write "1 Samuel 1:27" on the fridge tonight. Every time someone in the house opens it this week, they say the verse out loud. Rouen kids find this funnier than it deserves, which is exactly why it works.

Tomorrow: young Samuel hears his name (1 Samuel 3). ArkQuest queues the next reading automatically, so nobody has to decide what comes after tonight.
