Tonight's family reading · Phan Thiet
Elijah and the Still Small Voice — a 5-minute devotion for Phan Thiet families
1 Kings 19:1-13 · Hearing God in the quiet
Exhausted and afraid, Elijah hid in a cave. A great wind tore the mountain apart, then an earthquake, then fire — and God was in none of them. Then came a gentle whisper.
Use this one on the Phan Thiet weekend, when there is room for a longer conversation. Read 1 Kings 19:1-13, talk through the question properly, then write the memory verse somewhere everyone will see it on Monday.
Memory verse
“And after the fire came a gentle whisper.”1 Kings 19:12
Table question
When is our house quiet enough to hear a whisper?
30-second prayer
God, our days are loud. Give us thirty quiet seconds to hear you. Amen.
Make it stick: ask the same question again at breakfast tomorrow. Answers change overnight, and hearing that change is how a child learns that hearing god in the quiet is something you practise, not something you know.
Tomorrow: Elijah on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18:16-39). ArkQuest queues the next reading automatically, so nobody has to decide what comes after tonight.
On Mount Carmel, Elijah rebuilt an altar of twelve stones before calling on the Lord. What did the twelve stones represent?
