Hannah's Prayer — a 5-minute devotion for Alice families

1 Samuel 1 · Praying honestly and eating again

Year after year Hannah wept and prayed for a child, so silently that the priest thought she was drunk. She poured out her heart, went home, and ate again — her face no longer downcast, before anything had changed.

Use this one on the Alice weekend, when there is room for a longer conversation. Read 1 Samuel 1, talk through the question properly, then write the memory verse somewhere everyone will see it on Monday.

Memory verse

“I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him.”

1 Samuel 1:27

Table question

What have you been praying about for a long time?

30-second prayer

God, hear the prayers we have prayed for years. Give us peace before the answer comes. Amen.

Make it stick: ask the same question again at breakfast tomorrow. Answers change overnight, and hearing that change is how a child learns that praying honestly and eating again is something you practise, not something you know.

Tomorrow: young Samuel hears his name (1 Samuel 3). ArkQuest queues the next reading automatically, so nobody has to decide what comes after tonight.
