The Prodigal Son Comes Home — a 5-minute devotion for Redcar families

Luke 15:11-32 · A welcome that runs to meet you

A son took his inheritance early, spent it all and ended up feeding pigs. He rehearsed an apology on the road home — but his father saw him far off, ran to him, and threw a feast before he could finish it.

Parents in Redcar often ask what to do when siblings are years apart in age. Read Luke 15:11-32 together, then split the question: ask the younger child what happened in the story, and ask the older one why "a welcome that runs to meet you" is harder than it sounds.

Memory verse

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion.”

Luke 15:20

Table question

Is there an apology you are rehearsing that you could just say tonight?

30-second prayer

Father, thank you that you run. Make this house a place people can come home to. Amen.

Make it stick: ask the same question again at breakfast tomorrow. Answers change overnight, and hearing that change is how a child learns that a welcome that runs to meet you is something you practise, not something you know.

Tomorrow: the older brother outside the party (Luke 15:25-32). ArkQuest queues the next reading automatically, so nobody has to decide what comes after tonight.
