David and the Giant — a 5-minute devotion for Workington families

1 Samuel 17 · Courage that comes from God, not size

An army stood frozen for forty days while a giant shouted at them. A shepherd boy walked out with a sling and five smooth stones, saying the battle belonged to God. One stone was enough.

Use this one on the Workington weekend, when there is room for a longer conversation. Read 1 Samuel 17, talk through the question properly, then write the memory verse somewhere everyone will see it on Monday.

Memory verse

“The battle is the Lord's, and he will give all of you into our hands.”

1 Samuel 17:47

Table question

What is the giant you are most afraid of right now — and who is standing with you?

30-second prayer

God, the thing I am scared of looks much bigger than me. Remind me tonight that the battle is yours. Amen.

Make it stick: let a child read 1 Samuel 17 out loud tomorrow instead of you. Reading it to the family is worth ten times hearing it.

Tomorrow: David and Jonathan become friends (1 Samuel 18:1-4). ArkQuest queues the next reading automatically, so nobody has to decide what comes after tonight.
