Feeding the Five Thousand: A Family Devotion About Not Having Enough

**The disciples do the sum out loud: eight months' wages wouldn't buy each person a bite.** They are not being faithless; they are being accurate. Then Andrew mentions a boy with five small loaves and two fish, and adds, "but what is that among so many?"
The smallest lunch in the story
Barley loaves were the cheap bread. The fish were probably dried and the size of a hand. Whoever this boy was, he was not the person anyone expected to solve the problem — which is the point of mentioning him at all.
Twelve baskets
The leftovers are counted. One basket per disciple, so each of the men who had just said it was impossible carried home the evidence.
For tonight
Ask what small thing your family actually has: an hour, a spare seat at the table, a neighbour's name. Something gets multiplied in this story, and it starts as somebody's packed lunch.
Tonight's five minutes
**Read:** John 6:1-14, out loud, twice. **Ask:** What small thing do we have that someone else needs this week? **Pray:** Jesus, take the little we have and do something with it. Thank you for tonight's dinner. Amen.
If you'd rather not choose the passage yourself, tonight's family devotion is already written for this evening — one passage, one table question and a 30-second prayer, refreshed every day. You can also have it emailed to you each evening so it arrives before dinner.
