The Lost Sheep: A Family Devotion About Being Looked For

**Jesus told this story to people who were annoyed that he ate dinner with the wrong crowd.** That context is worth one sentence at the table, because it changes the parable from a cute animal story into an argument.
Ninety-nine is a good number
Any sensible owner would keep the ninety-nine and write off the one. The shepherd in the story does the opposite, and Jesus tells it that way deliberately. The maths is wrong on purpose.
The part kids notice
He carries it home. He doesn't drive it back or scold it on the walk. Ask your children why they think he carried it — the answers are usually better than anything a parent would supply.
Where this lands on a weeknight
Children hear plenty about being good. They hear much less about being looked for when they weren't. Tonight is a good night to say out loud that nobody at this table is the sheep who gets written off.
Tonight's five minutes
**Read:** Luke 15:1-7, out loud, twice. **Ask:** Have you ever been properly lost? Who came looking for you? **Pray:** Jesus, thank you for coming after the ones who wander. Help us come after each other the same way. Amen.
If you'd rather not choose the passage yourself, tonight's family devotion is already written for this evening — one passage, one table question and a 30-second prayer, refreshed every day. You can also have it emailed to you each evening so it arrives before dinner.
