1 Samuel 17 · Ages 5–11
David and Goliath
A shepherd boy named David beat a nine-foot giant — not with size or strength, but with faith in the living God.
Big idea
Big problems shrink when we remember how big God is.
Read-aloud
1. A giant problem
The Philistine army had a giant named Goliath. Every day for 40 days he shouted insults at God's people and no one dared to fight him.
2. A shepherd shows up
David was young — probably a teenager — and had come to bring food to his big brothers. When he heard Goliath, he said, 'Who is this to defy the living God?'
3. Five smooth stones
David refused armor and took a sling and five stones. He told Goliath, 'You come to me with a sword. I come to you in the name of the Lord.'
4. One stone, one God
David slung one stone. It hit the giant and he fell. God won the battle — David just showed up ready.
Memory verse
“The battle is the Lord's.”
— 1 Samuel 17:47
Talk about it
- What feels like a giant in your life right now?
- What's one 'smooth stone' God has already given you?
- How can we help each other remember God is bigger this week?
Family prayer
God, our giants feel huge, but you are so much bigger. Give us brave hearts today. Amen.
