Jonah 1–4 · Ages 4–10
Jonah and the Big Fish
Jonah ran from God — and ended up inside a giant fish. God rescued him and sent him back on mission with a fresh start.
Big idea
You can't outrun God — and you don't have to.
Read-aloud
1. Wrong way
God told Jonah to warn the city of Nineveh. Jonah didn't want to, so he jumped on a boat going the opposite direction.
2. A wild storm
God sent a storm so big the sailors panicked. Jonah admitted he was running from God. They tossed him overboard and the sea went calm.
3. Three days in the dark
God sent a huge fish to swallow Jonah. From the belly of the fish, Jonah prayed and thanked God for rescuing him.
4. A second chance
The fish spit Jonah out. Jonah went to Nineveh, told them about God, and the whole city turned to him.
Memory verse
“Salvation belongs to the Lord!”
— Jonah 2:9
Talk about it
- Have you ever tried to run from something God wanted you to do?
- What's a 'second chance' God has given you?
- Who could our family tell about God this week?
Family prayer
God, thank you for rescuing us even when we run. Help us go where you send us. Amen.
