John 6:1–14 · Ages 4–10
Jesus Feeds 5,000
One boy gave Jesus his lunch. Jesus fed a crowd bigger than a stadium — with baskets of leftovers.
Big idea
God does big things through small gifts we're willing to hand him.
Read-aloud
1. A hungry crowd
Five thousand men — plus women and kids — followed Jesus into a quiet place. It got late, and everyone was starving.
2. Five loaves and two fish
The disciples said, 'It would take a year's wages to feed them.' Then Andrew spoke up: 'There's a boy here with five small loaves and two fish — but what's that for so many?'
3. Jesus gives thanks
Jesus took the little lunch, thanked God, and started passing it out. Everyone ate as much as they wanted.
4. Twelve baskets left over
When it was done, they filled twelve baskets with leftovers. One kid's lunch, God's power, and a whole hillside was full.
Memory verse
“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish.”
— John 6:9
Talk about it
- What 'small lunch' could you offer God this week — time, kindness, a talent?
- Have you ever seen God stretch something small?
- Why did Jesus start with thank you?
Family prayer
Jesus, we give you what we have. Please multiply it for your glory. Amen.
