1 Kings 18 · Ages 7–12
Elijah and the Fire from Heaven
Elijah challenged 450 false prophets to a showdown — and God answered with fire.
Big idea
Our God is the real one — and he still shows up.
Read-aloud
1. A big showdown
Israel was worshiping fake gods. Elijah gathered everyone on Mount Carmel and challenged 450 prophets of Baal: 'Whichever god sends fire — he's the real God.'
2. Baal is silent
The prophets of Baal shouted and danced all day. Nothing happened. Elijah teased them: 'Maybe your god is asleep.'
3. Soaked in water
Elijah rebuilt God's altar and poured twelve jars of water on it until it filled the trench. Then he prayed a short, simple prayer.
4. Fire falls
Fire from heaven fell — burned the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and licked up the water. The people fell down and said, 'The Lord — he is God!'
Memory verse
“The Lord — he is God!”
— 1 Kings 18:39
Talk about it
- What 'fake gods' compete for our attention today?
- Where do you want to see God 'send fire' in our lives?
- How can we pray a simple, honest prayer like Elijah's?
Family prayer
God, you are the real one. Show up in our family — we're paying attention. Amen.
