Matthew 14:22–33 · Ages 5–11

Jesus Walks on Water

When a storm rocked their boat, Jesus came walking on the waves — and Peter took a step of faith.

Big idea

Faith is keeping our eyes on Jesus even when the waves are loud.

Read-aloud

1. A storm at night

The disciples were in a boat crossing the sea. A big storm blew up. Waves were huge, and Jesus wasn't with them.

2. Someone on the water

Around 3 a.m., they saw a figure walking on the sea. They screamed, 'It's a ghost!' Jesus called, 'It's me. Don't be afraid.'

3. Peter steps out

Peter said, 'If it's you, tell me to come.' Jesus said, 'Come.' Peter climbed out and walked on the water — toward Jesus.

4. Eyes on Jesus

When Peter looked at the wind he started to sink. Jesus grabbed his hand. Back in the boat, the wind stopped.

Memory verse

Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.

Matthew 14:27

Talk about it

  • What waves feel loud in your life right now?
  • What does it mean to 'keep your eyes on Jesus'?
  • How did Jesus respond when Peter sank?

Family prayer

Jesus, when the waves are loud, help us keep our eyes on you. Grab our hand when we sink. Amen.
