Matthew 27–28 · Ages 5–12
The Easter Story
Jesus died on a cross for our sins and rose again three days later — the greatest rescue in history.
Big idea
Jesus is alive — so everything sad can become untrue.
Read-aloud
1. The cross
Jesus was arrested and nailed to a cross. He hadn't done anything wrong. He took our punishment so we could be forgiven.
2. A borrowed tomb
His friends laid his body in a tomb and rolled a huge stone over the door. Soldiers guarded it. Everything felt dark.
3. Sunday morning
At dawn, the earth shook. An angel rolled back the stone. Mary came and found the tomb empty. An angel said, 'He is not here — he has risen!'
4. Alive!
Jesus met his friends alive. Death didn't win. Because Jesus is alive, everyone who trusts him has real hope forever.
Memory verse
“He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.”
— Matthew 28:6
Talk about it
- Why did Jesus have to die?
- What difference does it make that he's alive today?
- Who needs to hear this story from us?
Family prayer
Jesus, thank you for the cross and the empty tomb. You are alive. We love you. Amen.
