Matthew 6:9–13 · Ages 5–11

Jesus Teaches Us to Pray

When his friends asked how to pray, Jesus gave them a simple prayer we still say today.

Big idea

Prayer isn't fancy words — it's talking to a Father who loves you.

Read-aloud

1. 'Teach us to pray'

Jesus's friends had watched him pray for hours. They asked him to teach them.

2. Start with God

Jesus said: 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.' Start by remembering who you're talking to — a good Father.

3. Ask for today

'Give us today our daily bread.' Ask for what you need — just for today. Trust him with tomorrow.

4. Forgive and be led

'Forgive us as we forgive others. Lead us not into temptation.' Prayer changes our hearts as much as our situation.

Memory verse

Pray then like this: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

Matthew 6:9

Talk about it

  • Which line of the Lord's Prayer do you like most?
  • What do we need to ask God for today?
  • Who do we need to forgive?

Family prayer

Our Father in heaven, thank you that we can talk to you any time. Teach us to pray like Jesus. Amen.
