Matthew 13:31–32 · Ages 3–9
The Mustard Seed
Jesus said the kingdom of God is like a tiny seed that grows into a huge tree — small starts, big endings.
Big idea
Small obedience today is a big tree tomorrow.
Read-aloud
1. The smallest seed
Jesus held up a mustard seed. It's smaller than the tip of a pencil.
2. Planted
'When it's planted,' Jesus said, 'it grows.' Nothing showy, nothing fast. Just planted.
3. A big tree
It grows into a tree so big that birds come and rest in its branches.
4. God's kingdom
God's kingdom starts small — a prayer, a kind word, one 'yes' — and grows way beyond you.
Memory verse
“The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed.”
— Matthew 13:31
Talk about it
- What tiny 'seed' could you plant this week?
- Where have you seen God grow something small into something big?
- Why do you think God works this way?
Family prayer
God, we give you our small yeses. Grow them into something big for your kingdom. Amen.
