Genesis 11:1–9 · Ages 5–10
The Tower of Babel
People tried to build a tower to make a name for themselves — God gave them different languages so they'd spread out.
Big idea
Pride builds towers; humility builds people.
Read-aloud
1. One language
Everyone on earth spoke the same language. They settled in one place instead of filling the earth like God said.
2. 'Let's make a name'
They said, 'Let's build a city and a tower to the sky — let's make ourselves famous.'
3. God comes down
God saw their pride and confused their language. Suddenly no one could understand each other.
4. Scattered
They stopped building and spread out across the earth — right where God had wanted them all along.
Memory verse
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
— James 4:6
Talk about it
- When are you tempted to 'make a name' for yourself?
- How can our family choose humility this week?
- Why does God care where and how we live?
Family prayer
God, guard our hearts from pride. Help us live for your name, not ours. Amen.
