Matthew 17:1–8 · Ages 6–12
Jesus Shines on the Mountain
On a mountaintop, three friends saw Jesus glow like the sun — a glimpse of who he really is.
Big idea
In the end, it's always just Jesus — and he is enough.
Read-aloud
1. Up the mountain
Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a high mountain to pray.
2. Blinding light
Jesus's face began to shine like the sun. His clothes turned dazzling white. Moses and Elijah appeared, talking with him.
3. The Father speaks
A bright cloud covered them and God's voice said, 'This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.'
4. Just Jesus
The disciples fell down afraid. Jesus touched them: 'Don't be afraid.' When they looked up, they only saw Jesus.
Memory verse
“This is my beloved Son… listen to him.”
— Matthew 17:5
Talk about it
- What do you think it would have felt like to see that?
- What does it mean to 'listen to' Jesus this week?
- Why do you think Jesus showed his glory to just three friends?
Family prayer
Jesus, you are glorious. Help us listen to you above every other voice. Amen.
