Elijah and the Still Small Voice — a 5-minute devotion for Boa Vista families

1 Kings 19:1-13 · Hearing God in the quiet

Exhausted and afraid, Elijah hid in a cave. A great wind tore the mountain apart, then an earthquake, then fire — and God was in none of them. Then came a gentle whisper.

Parents in Boa Vista often ask what to do when siblings are years apart in age. Read 1 Kings 19:1-13 together, then split the question: ask the younger child what happened in the story, and ask the older one why "hearing god in the quiet" is harder than it sounds.

Memory verse

“And after the fire came a gentle whisper.”

1 Kings 19:12

Table question

When is our house quiet enough to hear a whisper?

30-second prayer

God, our days are loud. Give us thirty quiet seconds to hear you. Amen.

Make it stick: write "1 Kings 19:12" on the fridge tonight. Every time someone in the house opens it this week, they say the verse out loud. Boa Vista kids find this funnier than it deserves, which is exactly why it works.

Tomorrow: Elijah on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18:16-39). ArkQuest queues the next reading automatically, so nobody has to decide what comes after tonight.
