The Wise and Foolish Builders — a 5-minute devotion for Caruaru families

Matthew 7:24-27 · What your life is built on

Two houses looked the same until the storm came. One was built on rock and stood; one was built on sand and fell with a great crash. The difference was invisible until the weather changed.

This works best in Caruaru as a bedtime reading. Lights low, Matthew 7:24-27 read slowly, the memory verse said twice, then the prayer. Younger children fall asleep on "what your life is built on"; older ones usually want to argue about it first, which is fine.

Memory verse

“Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”
Matthew 7:24

Table question

What is one thing we could actually do tomorrow with what we read tonight?

30-second prayer

Jesus, we hear a lot and do a little. Help us build on rock this week. Amen.

Make it stick: on the way through Caruaru tomorrow, one person says the first half of "Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock." and someone else finishes it. Three tries and it is memorised.

Tomorrow: the narrow gate (Matthew 7:13-14). ArkQuest queues the next reading automatically, so nobody has to decide what comes after tonight.
