Jesus Calms the Storm — a 5-minute devotion for Sao Paulo families

Mark 4:35-41 · Peace that arrives before the storm ends

Wind tore at the boat and water poured in while Jesus slept on a cushion. The disciples woke him, terrified. He stood, said three words to the wind, and the lake went glassy still.

This works best in Sao Paulo as a bedtime reading. Lights low, Mark 4:35-41 read slowly, the memory verse said twice, then the prayer. Younger children fall asleep on "peace that arrives before the storm ends"; older ones usually want to argue about it first, which is fine.

Memory verse

“Quiet! Be still!”
Mark 4:39

Table question

What is making your heart feel stormy tonight?

30-second prayer

Jesus, you spoke and the water went still. Speak that same peace over this house tonight. Amen.

Make it stick: write "Mark 4:39" on the fridge tonight. Every time someone in the house opens it this week, they say the verse out loud. Sao Paulo kids find this funnier than it deserves, which is exactly why it works.

Tomorrow: Jesus heals a man nobody could help (Mark 5:1-20). ArkQuest queues the next reading automatically, so nobody has to decide what comes after tonight.
