Peter Walks on the Water — a 5-minute devotion for Fortaleza families

Matthew 14:22-33 · Sinking is not the end of the story

In the dark before dawn, the disciples saw Jesus walking on the lake. Peter climbed out and walked too — until he looked at the wind. As he sank, he shouted for help, and immediately a hand caught him.

This works best in Fortaleza as a bedtime reading. Lights low, Matthew 14:22-33 read slowly, the memory verse said twice, then the prayer. Younger children fall asleep on "sinking is not the end of the story"; older ones usually want to argue about it first, which is fine.

Memory verse

“Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.”

Matthew 14:31

Table question

What made you look at the wind this week instead of at Jesus?

30-second prayer

Jesus, when we sink, catch us. Thank you that you always reach out immediately. Amen.

Make it stick: on the way through Fortaleza tomorrow, one person says the first half of "Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him." and someone else finishes it. Three tries and it is memorised.

Tomorrow: feeding the four thousand (Matthew 15:29-39). ArkQuest queues the next reading automatically, so nobody has to decide what comes after tonight.
